You may be deciding between traditional Porcelain Veneers and Lumineers. Both have advantages and shortcomings. We discuss both here.
Porcelain veneers have been used by cosmetic dentists for some time. They are very stain resistant and are a great move for people who want a "smile makeover". They will last for more than a decade in most cases and as long as 20 years. The appointments are usually an hour long or longer. typically 2 are needed. Porcelain veneers can make your exiting teeth actually a little stronger.
The downsides are that some tooth will have to be removed for the new veneers. This can result in a degree of tooth trauma. This amount of removal varies so check with your aesthetic dentist. These are a big change and it can take a few months before they feel like a part of you. Although somewhat adjustable, veneers can make you talk differently at first as you get used to your new smile.
Lumineers are relatively new on the cosmetic dentistry front. They are very thin, less than .3mm thick. The beauty is that no reduction in tooth size is needed to add these. They are espoused to be as resistant to damage and leakage as tradiotial porcelain. since no tooth is removed, this is an easy process to reverse if needed.
The disadvantages include a limited amount of actual correction that can be done, since there is no tooth reduction. Also, due to this, there is potential for larger, bulkier feeling and appearing veneers. And, since this is still a new procedure, less dentists are performing this procedure at this time.
Choosing between the two is a matter to discuss with your qualified dentist. They can help guide you to the veneers that will make your smile even better.
